As a student, I see some of my teachers use MS word very different than I do. I use MS word, for projects, papers, notes, etc while my teachers may use if for basic uses as to write something and print it out. I feel that in my generation, MS was taught and focused on in high school so we could use MS word to its full potential while some teachers may only know the basics by watching others use it.
My experience with copyright and fair use of materials in an educational environment is unique. Being a student, I have seen teachers use pictures and photocopy pages from textbooks for convenience. I have also had teachers who use photos from textbooks but use the correct citation to show their students that they are using someone else work. For the teachers that use citations in their own work, help teach and show students that no matter who they are, they need to use citations so they are no stealing someone else's work. Seeing this for myself, I have taken citations into account when working on projects, papers, and other assignments for school and work. I would also hold my own students accountable to use citations when they use others work. I would also teach them the difference between creating their own work and rewriting someone else's work.
First, I would teach my students about copyright. This lesson would include teaching students how to properly use citations and when citations are necessary. I would stress the importance to citations even if the students reword a sentence or a paragraph because that knowledge is not their own, it is someone else's. The next topic I would discuss would be Academic Honesty. Academic honesty is covered in most classes but does not propose a solution to the issue. I would address this issue by discussing what academic honesty specifically is and then explain how breaking academic honesty not only affects the person who copied or cheated, but it also affects the person that had done the work originally. I would also put in place a system that would allow students to hold each other responsible while also not feeling like they are being a “snitch”. By making it clear that all parties will be a fault and providing a system that will make students feel comfortable about addressing the misuse of the policy, it will help students hold each other accountable. Lastly, I would address the digital divide. Many families or students may not have access to technology once they leave school. I would explain to students the resources that the school provides and if they were not able to complete work at home due to this digital divide to come talk to me. I would also limit or completely avoid work that would require technology that is not easily accessible to all students.
